Operational Definitions
The percentage of occupied jobs in the labour force requiring advanced technological skills. In theory, jobs that are and are not occupied (vacancies) should be counted. However, the figures on vacancies are quite negligible. More importantly, the Supplementary Survey of Job Vacancies used a different classification of occupation from the current one before 1993. To maintain consistency over time, only jobs that are occupied are counted. Jobs requiring advanced managerial and technological skills refer to managers and administrators, professionals and associate professionals. The Census and Statistics Department has noted that from 1993 onwards, the occupational classification used in the General Household Survey basically follows the major groups of the “International Standard Classification of Occupations (1988)” with local adaptation for Hong Kong. There are significant differences, according to the Department, between this classification scheme and the one adopted for years prior to 1993, and therefore no comparison can be made with earlier years.

Figure for 1981 is extracted from Hong Kong Annual Digest of Statistics and is not strictly comparable to those for other years because the categorization used in 1981 Census is different from the one on which figures for other years are based. The figure refers to professional, technical and related workers, and administrative and managerial workers.
According to C&SD (25Sep2009), starting from the year 2001, annual figures derived from the General Household Survey (GHS) may be different from those in the earlier edition. For the previous edition, the annual figures are compiled based on the average data for the four quarters of the year concerned. Starting from this edition, these statistics are compiled based on data collected in the General Household Survey in January to December each year as well as the mid-year population estimates by District Council district compiled jointly by the Census and Statistics Department and an inter-departmental Working Group on Population Distribution Projections.
