Operational Definitions
The area of country park, marine park, sites of special scientific interest (SSSI), RAMSAR sites as percentage of total land area. Country parks include scenic hills, woodlands, reservoirs and coastline in all parts of Hong Kong. Out of the 1092 square kilometers of Hong Kong land, 41,582 hectares belongs to 23 country parks and 15 special areas. These cover around 40% of Hong Kong land. Marine parks include areas of high biological, geomorphologic and geological interest of the coastal habitat of Hong Kong. There are 3 marine parks in Hong Kong, namely, Cape D’Aguilar (20 hectares); Hoi Ha Wan (260 hectares); Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau (1200 hectares). SSSI include areas designated to conserve and protect fauna, flora and other natural features of special scientific value. There are 63 designated sites within 15 Special areas (11 of which are within the Country Parks). Ramsar sites refer to areas defined in the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in Ramsar, Iran in 1971 (commonly known as the Ramsar Convention). There are 2 Ramsar sites in Hong Kong, namely, Mai Po Marshes and Inner Deep Bay.
