Operational Definitions

Single parent is defined as a mother or father who is never married, widowed, divorced or separated, with child(ren) aged under 18 living with her/him in the same household.

Footnote

All figures are collected from Social Welfare Department since 1981.
Figure for 1981 is extracted from a study done by Young (1984), which is based on the Supplementary Report from Labour Force Survey, March, 1980. Figures for 1997 and 1998 are not available.

SWD also noted that there are domestic households comprising more than one single parent. Taking an example of a divorced woman with a son aged 5 cohabiting with a widowed man with a son aged 10, they are regarded as two single parents living in the same household. The number of such households is however small.
