Operational Definitions The percentage of single parent households. Figure for 1986, 1991 and 1996 are based on the data collected from Census and By-census in 1986, 1991 and 1996 and compiled by the Census and Statistics Department at the request of Social Welfare Department on the socio-economic characteristics of the single parents, the housing and household particulars of the single parent families and particulars of children living in these families. Single parent is defined as “a mother or father who was widowed, divorced or separated, with child(ren) aged under 18 living with her/him and was a usual resident of Hong Kong”.
Footnote All figures are collected from Social Welfare Department since 1981.
Figure for 1981 is extracted from a study done by Young (1984), which is based on the Supplementary Report from Labour Force Survey, March, 1980. Figures for 1997 and 1998 are not available.
SWD also noted that there are domestic households comprising more than one single parent. Taking an example of a divorced woman with a son aged 5 cohabiting with a widowed man with a son aged 10, they are regarded as two single parents living in the same household. The number of such households is however small.
