Operational Definitions

The area of Country park, Special Area, Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and Ramsar Site are counted as percentage of total land area. Effort was taken to avoid double counting where some of these four categories of protected area overlapped. Country parks include scenic hills, woodlands, reservoirs and coastline in all parts of Hong Kong. As of Dec 2018, out of the 1106 square kilometers of Hong Kong land, 44,312 hectares belongs to 24 Country Parks and 22 Special Areas (11 of them overlapped with Country Parks). These cover around 40.1% of Hong Kong land. SSSIs are areas with special flora, fauna, or geological/geomorphological importance. As of Dec 2018, there are 67 SSSIs (double counting is avoided on those SSSIs overlapping with the other three categories of protected areas). The Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site was designated under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. All Marine Park/Marine Reserve/SSSIs occupying sea area were excluded from these calculations. No Country Park or Special Area fall within sea areas. Please note that this definition is different from the ones adopted in for year 2011 and 2012 when marine protected area were included.
