Operational Definitions
The expenditure on food and housing expressed as a percentage share of total household expenditure for the low income group. Low income group is obtained by selecting household which earn less than or equal to half median household income from each category of households demarcated by household size.

According to the Census and Statistics Department, raw data for the 1979/80 and 1984/85 rounds of Household Expenditure Survey (HES), which could have been used as proxies for 1981 and 1986, have been destroyed. Figures for 1981 and 1986 are therefore not available.
Figures for the 1999/2000, 2004/05, and 2009/10 and 2014/15 Household Expenditure Survey are used as proxies for 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015 respectively. Figures for other years are not available, since no HES was conducted.
Please note that income data collected in the HES are mainly for consistency check on the reported expenditure data. The quality and reliability of income data may be subject to a fairly wide margin of error. Therefore, the statistics compiled using the income data as the classifying variable should be used with caution.
